Gomoku, also known as Five in a Row, is an ancient strategy board game that originated in China over 2,000 years ago. It was later introduced to Japan and other parts of Asia, where it gained popularity and evolved into the game we know today.
The game was originally played on a Go board, which is why it's sometimes referred to as "Gobang" or "Five in a Row". Gomoku means "five pieces" in Japanese, which refers to the goal of placing five stones in a row.
Today, Gomoku is enjoyed by millions of people worldwide and is recognized as an official sport by the International Mind Sports Association.
Gomoku is played on a 15x15 grid board. Players take turns placing their stones on the intersections of the grid. Black goes first, and players alternate turns placing one stone per turn.
The goal is to be the first to form an unbroken line of five stones horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The game ends when a player successfully forms a line of five stones or when the board is full, resulting in a draw.
Unlike Go, there is no capturing of stones in Gomoku, making it simpler to learn but still requiring strategic thinking and planning.
